Description
The original work on Bull Rock Lighthouse began in the late 1800’s by a group of miners who were landed by boat at the Island. Their job, to excavate more than 15,000 cubic yards of rock, cut more than 300 steps into the side of the island for immediate access from the boat landing. Ultimately, these men used their own strength and hand tools to create a foundation for the lighthouse to be built even putting the bi-form hyper-radial optic (the biggest at the time) in place manually.
The gas-powered light first lit on January 1,1889 and over the course of its service has seen its beam broaden with the advancement to vapourised paraffin and ultimately electricity in 1974.
At water-level, there is a tunnel that has been navigated when the tides and conditions suit by able seamen in small boats. Not for the faint of heart.
This original watercolour painting was created on Fabriano Acquarello Grana Fina Cold Press 25% Cotton paper using various watercolours and white gouache.
