Description
I painted this scene from a photograph taken while walking up Dublin’s quays at around 8.30am on a sunny autumn morning. The sun was rising behind Liberty Hall, one of Dublin’s first high-rise buildings, throwing a bold highlight down its side. Capturing the light was fundamental to this piece, from the warm tones on the early morning Georgian facade of the north quays to the luminous Liffey water. The painting is one of the largest I’ve worked on, the canvas measures 76cm x 61cm, and it took many hours to complete. Working on a larger canvas enabled me to spend time on the detail, hopefully doing justice to those fluidic, undulatory reflections.
