I have a regular routine of working using the title of the work on the actual piece itself. Sometimes it can be a lyric in a song that is on my record player, a phrase I see on the TV, a notice in a shop window, graffiti, a word I have heard but not understood, so I have to look it up and then include on that day’s art. Cludgie comes from a slang word in Scottish that means toilet.
I use fine-liner pen and a combination of Sharpie pens with Posca pens to great a juxtaposition of texture on my work. I compartmentalise various elements to reflect my neurodivergent brain. I have a combination of conditions: bipolar, functional neurological disorders, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The upshot is that I can get quickly overwhelmed by too much stimulation which causes me to drop to the floor, hence my drawings are usually packed with various elements. There are moments of what is called ‘brain fog’, meaning a general malaise, a lack of cognitive ability, and that is why in my art there can be large spaces of emptiness.
Cludgie stuck out in one of James Kelman’s short-stories. I thought it a cool name for a toilet. In this piece I have used several colours as opposed to my usual working method of a limited palette of three colours (inclusive of black). I love to put unrelated stencils, colours and symbols (that don’t really mean anything) in little boxes so the mind can try to figure out what connection there could be, rather like the Surrealist did.
