Description
On March 11, 2011 the lights of Kilcredaun were discontinued by the Commission of Irish Lights. This darkness was sparked by the use of GPS technology which replaced the lighthouse keeper in many lighthouses around the world. The beacon of Kilcredaun Lighthouse served the waters and mariners of the Shannon Estuary for nearly 200 years. Built in 1874, the lens was operated by gas which was created on-site in a small red building whose red roof can be seen in the painting and is easily spotted while at sea. The gas used to operate the light was created from the combination of carbide and water; the waste or bi-product was a white sludge which was often used to paint local houses and otherwise was disposed of on the cliff edge. I felt it was historically important to include this feature in my painting. The lighthouse was electrified in 1979.
This original watercolour painting was created on Fabriano Acquarello Grana Fina Cold Press 25% Cotton paper using various watercolours and white gouache.
