I’ve always felt that pumpkins arrive before the season itself does — almost like a gentle announcement that autumn is on its way. I painted this one because it reminded me so strongly of that moment in early autumn when you walk into a shop and suddenly see the first pumpkins of the year stacked together. For me, it’s the clearest sign that the season has turned.
This piece carries a bit of nostalgia too. Pumpkins take me back to childhood dishes, simple and comforting, and at the same time they inspire all the new autumn recipes that appear every year: soups, bakes, warm spices, all those cosy things we only crave once the air cools down.
