I grew up in Sandycove and spent many childhood summers at Sandycove Harbour. The iconic Martello tower stands adjacent to the harbour, and there are many along the Dublin coastline. In contrast, you can see an imposing white Art Deco house beside it, designed by the well-known Irish architect Michael Scott. I regularly take a stroll down here when I’m out in Sandycove. I based this painting on a photo as the late evening sun cast beautiful warm light on the scene. Some late-evening bathers were still taking a last dip. The painting took many hours to complete over several weeks. I wanted to capture the stillness of the water and the tranquil atmosphere. Composition is always something I’m conscious of. I felt using the rocks in the foreground helped frame the scene. They draw the eye into the painting towards the focal point, the sun-kissed harbour.
